We tire of the mass-produced looks seen on the high street so try supplementing their schemes with one-off, bespoke and individual pieces. Faced with an unpredictable world and insecure future it's understandable that people long for a bit of nostalgia.
Wabi Sabi
Although it's an ancient Japanese aesthetic, Wabi Sabi is being welcomed as a new design trend in the West. Not just a decor style, it's a spiritual philosophy.
So what does Wabi-Sabi mean?
Wabi means 'way of life' - Sabi means 'beauty through age'. The concepts of Wabi-Sabi correlate with the principles of Zen Buddhism.
According to Wabi-Sabi, beauty comes from things that are impermanent, imperfect and incomplete. From a design perspective, this means materials that are simple and natural, textures that are uneven and rough, shapes that are organic and irregular; colours that are neutral and subdued.
For me, Interior Design is a very personal thing, if you buy the things that you love, which make you happy and are pleased with the result, then you will have achieved your idea of perfection, and in a world of shaky finances, wars, disease, what we all really want is a place to come home to, which envelopes us in comfort and beauty and makes us glad to be there.
